Professional Biography
Roger Brown is an Associate Professor of agricultural economics with crosscutting interests in curriculum design, the humanities, and animal studies. Trained in English (BA), international affairs (MA), town planning (MPlan), public administration (MPA), and forestry (PhD), Roger draws on this interdisciplinary background to design innovative courses such as an economics-focused writing course (AEC 306), a tourism-focused research methods course (AEC 300), and an animal-centered humanities course (CAS 301). His research is similarly interdisciplinary, examining how people interact with non-human animals, the moral and practical conflicts that arise from those interactions, and the evidence people use to resolve and justify their choices. He has received numerous teaching and service honors, including the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for community service, the University Senate’s Outstanding Senator Award, and his college’s inaugural award for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Roger currently serves on the University’s Distance Learning Steering Committee and advises three animal-related student organizations: the polo team, the bass fishing team, and a service dog training club.
